How Successful Students are Created

The U.S. Department of Labor defines an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) as “a set of activities that helps you take charge of your future.” An ILP in the classroom is a written plan with goals and strategies for the student to achieve those goals.

At Cloud Peak Academy each student will have an ILP to guide them throughout their school years. These plans are reviewed often with the student, their parents/guardians, and teachers. And since students grow – and change their minds – the ILP can be appropriately adjusted.

ILPs are broken down into categories that align with each class. So a student will have a separate ILP for each class: math, science, language arts, social studies, and electives. Successful goals follow the S.M.A.R.T. format (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound). The teachers and counselor guide the students in making the goals, and hold them accountable throughout the process.

Goals are based on what the student wants to achieve at school. Beginning in 9th grade the goals will focus on their future and career. Developing the skill of setting goals and experiencing achievement puts kids in a position to enjoy life. It also prepares students for their future of college, work and life in general.

Because Cloud Peak Academy teachers coordinate learning across the subjects, the student’s goals will flow as well. What the student learns in  science will correlate with what they learn in English, math and social studies. Connections will be made and goals will be met. What is learned at school will make sense in the real world.

ILPs really do help students take charge of their future. And Cloud Peak Academy is there for guidance and support. What do you think about ILPs?
