Honor & Politeness
The word ‘respect’ comes from Latin: respicere, which means “to look back at, regard”. How does one show respect at school? The Radclyffe School in the United Kingdom spells it out perfectly. They call it “The 5 Respects.”
- Speak respectfully: speak to others as you would want to be spoken to.
- Behave respectfully: treat others as you would want to be treated.
- Respect the school environment: clean up after yourself, obey rules, have pride in your surroundings.
- Respect your learning: be on time, want to be successful, do your homework on time, be honest with yourself.
- Respect other students’ learning: value other’s ideas and their work and contributions, cooperate with others, add to a positive environment.
Some say that in order to gain respect you need to give it; that only after being respectful will others be respectful towards you. According to a paper by the International Organization for Migration called The Psychology of Respect, respect begins with oneself. The International Organization for Migration works with people from all over the world. This article spells out basic ways to show respect to others. One of those ways is to speak positively.
Students at Cloud Peak Academy are asked to be respectful to themselves and to others. This value of respect prepares students to achieve success in their education, advance in their careers, and become a benefit to society.
